New World Flamenco Festival: Somos Flamencos
The Irvine Barclay Theatre is pleased to announce the seventh edition of the New World Flamenco Festival from August 8-17, 2008.

The New World Flamenco Festival has fostered a trend that is being noticed around the world – flamenco has a stylistic variety and point of view as rich as anything found in contemporary dance. One of the hallmarks of this festival is its ability to convince established flamenco artists, stars of their generation, to create or bring new and exciting works to premiere at the festival.

Somos Flamencos, the theme of this year’s festival, translates into English as “we are flamencos.” The Festival will explore what it means to be "flamenco" with the world premiere of a new show by Yaelisa, the Festival’s artistic director. The show was rehearsed in Cadiz, Spain for three days earlier this year.

Yaelisa: “Somos Flamencos is both the title of our show and the name of a new company. It describes a group of vibrant, passionate artists committed to the idea of flamenco as an art of improvisation and interplay. We have no agenda. It may be modern, innovative or traditional — but it is a performance that changes from evening to evening, allowing the artist to surrender to individual moments without conceit, capturing the essence of flamenco. This is pure flamenco, and we are flamencos, every day.”

More than 6,000 people attend the New World Flamenco Festival every August from all over North America. The Festival is a signature program of Irvine Barclay Theatre, produced by its President, Douglas C. Rankin; the festival's artistic direction is provided by Emmy Award-winning flamenco artist Yaelisa, and musical direction is coordinated by flamenco guitarist, Jason McGuire.

Somos Flamencos (We Are Flamencos)
World Premiere!
August 8, 9, 10, 12, 13
Fri, Sat, Tue, Wed at 8pm; Sun at 6pm
Tickets: Fri, Sat, Sun: $43, $38 / Tue, Wed: $38, $33

Somos Flamencos celebrates flamenco's treasured tradition of improvisation and spontaneity among its dancers, singers and guitarists. Yaelisa, the Festival's artistic director, directs this extraordinary ensemble of some of Spain's top artists. In response to some of the Festival's other original shows (Jerez, Puro, Sin Fronteras starring Savion Glover, and Y Una Batita de Cola), the Festival has been asked to represent this show on a national tour during the 2009-10 season. The run of this show has been extended to five nights of vibrant dance, majestic cante and soulful guitar.

Compañía Antonio El Pipa
"De Tablao"
West Coast Premiere
August 15, 16, 17
Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 6pm
Tickets: $43, $38

The intimacy and energy of the tablao magnified by the excitement of the concert stage–this show, starring the magnificent Antonio El Pipa, combines it all to fabulous effect. His production, De Tablao, has garnered rave reviews at Spain’s major festivals and on tour throughout Europe. The cast will transport the audience to an intimate Spanish nightclub and set the Barclay stage afire.
