Welcome to the new and re-designed SF Flamenco online magazine!
My name is Arvind Thyagarajan, and I am the new editor / director of "SF Flamenco", our beloved San Francisco Bay Area Flamenco Community Arts Project founded by Jason Engelund. I'm very excited to take the reins of this important cultural resource, and in my excitement I guess I re-designed the whole thing. I hope you like it :-)
This is the first monthly issue of the re-invented sfflamenco.com website, and the magazine is still in the process of a gradual changeover from the founding director, Jason, to myself. So please bear with us until all the sections and links are back up to their former glory and fullness. As a welcome gift to the community, I am listing, here on the front page of the magazine, all the Featured Shows that I have been emailed. If you are an artist with something to post for June, please email me and the gift will keep on giving (in June!)
Also, any and all feedback is most welcome. Please email me at sfflamenco@gmail.com and I'll do my best to respond and improve this site to serve the community better.
Here's looking forward to a bright cultural future for flamenco in the Bay Area, in the US, in Spain, and worldwide. After all, it is our collective culture manifested through the Arts that truly reflects our diversity and identity. In the words of Juan Mascaró, "Science walks on earth. Poetry flies above the earth... neither love, nor the good, nor the beautiful can be seen by the telescope or the microscope. This is why the poetry of the past is never old as the science of the past is." (Introduction to The Dhammapada as translated by Juan Mascaró)
The community of professional and talented artists and performers of the thriving SF Bay Area flamenco scene bring their poetry into action on stage, in theatres and tablaos, every week. Let's venture out and support them by partaking, nay indulging, in the arts!
Paz y Amor,
Arvind

Ballet Flamenco José Porcel
Ballet Flamenco José Porcel performs a seductive blend of traditional and modern flamenco, an evocative art form that probably originated around the 15th century, during the Gypsies' encounter with the people of southern Spain. A former principal with the National Ballet of Spain, Porcel has performed to wide acclaim and his lavish music and dance spectacles display both abundant creative genius and a desire to challenge convention while honoring tradition. Spain's El Pais has praised Porcel for "a stamp that differentiates him from the typical dancer, with his breadth and lean profile, his strong dramatic accent that helps him to command respect on the stage."
