The company's annual concert series are always a much anticipated pleasure for its loyal viewers, who know they can count on polished, sassy, passionate, dancing to classical Spanish music and the moving world beat of Flamenco. To celebrate the three week run, the company will open in San Francisco where Carolina will present the Best of Brisas de Espana featuring many of her outstanding works developed for the company during the past five years.
Carolina has invited one of Spain's best singers and dancer, Jesus Montoya to appear with her company for their Home Concert Season in Walnut Creek. He was born in Sevilla, Spain into a Gypsy family steeped in Flamenco tradition. His energetic stage presence and unforgettable voice have earned him the name: El Genio Gitano (The Gypsy Dynamo). The Los Angeles Times goes even further by declaring him the Pavarotti of Flamenco.
Carolina's new choreographic and musical work will make it's World Premiere for her 5th Concert Season at the Dean Lesher Theater. She will explore Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) "Leyenda" by fusing the pulsating rhythms of Flamenco, the haunting undertones of Middle Eastern music and the lyrical romantic notes of 18th Century Spanish music through song and dance.
Artistic Director Carolina Lugo, in addition to founding the company in 1995 has been its creative force, having choreographed an astounding twenty-five new works. She deserves a great deal of credit for bringing her own strong sense of Spanish culture to her dancers, musicians and audiences that not only preserve traditions, but pushes our notion of contemporary cultural infusion to new limits. Her greatest pleasure she says, comes from performing with her dancers on stage. " Being a soloist is very gratifying and is every artists dream. However, dancing with the ensemble which I learned from working with many master artists, dancers and choreographers while touring the America's and Internationally many times starting at the age of 14, may be the most challenging aspect of dance because of the demand of syncopated movements with other dancers. Its reward comes from the feeling of being one with the other dancers, the heightened sense that you develop for each other, the musicians, yourself, and the shared experience with your audience." She feels very strongly that when all of these elements are present on stage, dance goes beyond the limitations of routine and becomes a celebration of wonderment for everyone to enjoy.
The summer breezes will certainly bring with it another enchanted evening of passionate dance and song from Spain. Carolina and her dancers create their own waves of rhythms with riveting footwork, syncopated hand clapping and castanet playing to which they move to with great grace. This marriage with the music is accomplished at the same time as they whirl their long dresses, fans, and Spanish mantons embracing the audience with the fiery sensuality of dancing. Audiences have come to love the high energy of Carolina and her company and what's not to love! Ole!
