New World Flamenco Festival: Tradición y Familia
August 5-14, 2005

The theme of the 2005 Festival pays homage to tradition and the family. An art that has been evolving and changing for so many years, drawing greater and more sophisticated audiences, should look back upon its roots. Family and dynasties handing down their artistic and cultural traditions, even their idiosyncratic styles which identify them to the masses (flamenco, that is) are bucking the trend towards modernism and experimentation and finding great success doing it. They are almost always gitano.

This year's Festival pays tribute to their resolve. We began a small exploration of "dynasty" with "Jerez, Puro " in 2003, a show conceived and created by myself and Antonio Malena and commissioned for the Festival. "Jerez puro, esencia," under the direction of Antonio Malena and Maria del Mar Moreno, was subsequently presented at the prestigious Festival de Jerez in February of 2005 with great success. This project fueled my desire to devote an entire Festival to the traditional branch of flamenco past, which may become the wave of the 'future'.

My choices for this year's Festival are La Familia Farruco; dancers Yolanda Heredia, Isabel Bayon and Concha Jareno in "Y Una Batita de Cola," three female specialists keeping alive a tradition identified as the cultural symbol of Spain; and Compania Antonio "El Pipa," featuring his aunt, the famous Juana la del Pipa and a cast of 14 dancers and musicians in one of Antonio's signature works, "Vivencias," a semi-autobiographical evening telling the compelling story of his family's life, their struggles and loves and mostly, their flamenco. I urge Festival devotees to visit the Irvine Barclay Theater website for information on the events. Workshop enrollment will be limited this year and strictly enforced. It is recommended you complete registration for classes quickly in order to ensure your place.

Following three hugely successful summer editions, the New World Flamenco Festival returns in 2005, this year themed "Tradition and Family." The Festival will present outstanding artists from Spain who preserve precious elements of the flamenco art form and who carry forward the highest performance standards of flamenco music and dance as a source of pride and family tradition.

Before and after each performance, enjoy the festival atmosphere of Café Flamenco with food, refreshments and entertainment on the theatre's plaza.

Los Farrucos [Sevilla]
August 5-7, 2005
Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 6pm

The Farruco dynasty began with Antonio Montoya, "El Farruco," one of the most important and dynamic figures in flamenco dance of the last 40 years. As patriarch, he led generations of Farrucos to continue in his estampa, or style, which is ferocious and pure, completely Gypsy, and rooted in a deep respect for the cante. The current generation of the Farruco family now takes center stage as "Farruco," only 19 years old, is accompanied by his mother, the inimitable "La Farruca." As matriarch of this clan, La Farruca made a powerful impression on audiences when she toured the U.S. in the 80's with the world-famous show Flamenco Puro. This performance promises to bring the power and beauty of the entire Farruco clan - past and present - to southern California audiences. If ever there was a definition of a Gypsy dynasty - Farruco is it.

Tickets: $42, $36

Y Una Batita de Cola [Sevilla]
August 9-10, 2005
Tue & Wed at 8pm

Yaelisa, the Festival's artistic director has created this special evening, bringing together eight fine artists to showcase an important tradition that may be fading from view. Yolanda Heredia, Isabel Bayon and Concha Jareno are three important dancers celebrated for their exquisite expertise in bata de cola - that long, elegant train flowing from the traditional flamenco costume. With a cast that includes brother and sister singers, Encarna and Jose Anillo, the evening is a tribute to the beguiling skills and art of the feminine.

Tickets: $38, $32

Compañia Antonio El Pipa [Jerez]
August 12-14, 2005
Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 6pm

Compania Antonio El Pipa closes the Festival with one of its signature shows, Vivencias. In true Gypsy tradition, Vivencias explores the themes of love, honor, sacrifice and family in an autobiographical show by renowned dancer Antonio el Pipa, Jerez de la Frontera's favorite son. Including a special appearance by Antonio's aunt the wonderful Juana la del Pipa, the last weekend of the New World Flamenco Festival promises to bring audiences to their feet with sheer joy and infectious Jerez-style energy.

Tickets: $42, $36

New from Sevilla Press...
Flamenco Dance: Secrets of the Professionals

If you desire to be a performing or professional flamenco bailaora, SECRETS OF THE PROFESSIONALS might be the most valuable investment you can make in your dance future. For less than the cost of a single private dance lesson you can own inside information that would normally be acquired (if you are lucky) only through years of lessons, workshops, and performing. This is the stuff that is generally not taught in dance classes—tips and techniques that are the keys to success. It is not so much about planta-tacón (ball-heel) as it is about what to do with planta-tacón after you learn it. Although the book was written for students, dancers of all levels should be able to benefit from reading it. SECRETS OF THE PROFESSIONALS should also be of interest to many aficionados and guitarists. Although the book gets a little technical at times, the aficionado is sure to gain insight into the dance and enhance his pleasure in watching dance performances. Guitarists who wish to be accompanists will find a great deal of useful information. Even dance teachers will benefit from being reminded of what they should be teaching in their classes. "Reflejos": an East Indian/Flamenco composition is an amalgum of the Raag form, in particular the Yaman Raag and the Palos of: Solea por Bulerias, Siguiryras, Zambra and Tarantas.

"Llanto y Grito" a piece stretched from the plaintive fabric of Tarantas, the loss & suffering of the Miners, into the outspoken virility of Bulerias.
