“SONIDOS GITANOS” FLAMENCO FROM SPAIN
NORTH AMERICA TOUR

Portland, OR-- Direct from Flamenco’s birthplace, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, The Maria Bermudez Company, Sonidos Gitanos, begins its first North American tour in June of 2003.

The initial leg of the tour includes 9 major cities, opening June 6 in Vancouver, BC and concluding in San Diego, CA on June 24. The group returns to the United States in the fall for a number of east coast appearances including New York City and Miami, Fl. A current tour schedule is attached.

The international performances of Sonidos Gitanos have brought great critical acclaim in Europe, North America, and the Far East. The Los Angeles Times said: "There is blistering and then there is hot! Flamenco dancer Maria Bermudez and her company of musicians and dancers nearly torched the stage with their high combustible yet tradition-bound program Sonidos Gitanos. White-hot passion coalesced with flying feet and fluttering fringe as adrenaline soared in this production.”

Jerez de la Frontera, known as La Cuna del Flamenco (the cradle of Flamenco) will soon be inaugurated as La Ciudad del Flamenco (the city of Flamenco) by the country of Spain. Jerez prides itself in bearing its children singing and dancing straight from the womb and is noted for its devotion to the roots of pure Flamenco song, dance and music.

Bermudez fulfills her obligation as Artistic Director and lead dancer by highlighting the most accomplished and sometimes-unusual artists this region of Spain has to offer. Past performers have included both the traditional and the contemporary: El Capullo (singer), La Chiqui (singer), Alejandro Granados (dancer), Domingo Ortega (dancer); Tomasito (Rap-singer-dancer) and Grammy-nominated Flamenco-pop group, Navajita Platea.
On this tour, Sonidos Gitanos brings together 8 artists who magnificently interpret the traditional Flamenco style of the region, including such renowned musicians as Antonio de la Malena (singer), Jesus Alvarez (guitar) and Luis de la Tota (percussionist/palmero). Dancers include Maria Bermudez, as well as two diverse, powerful young dancers: El Junco and Andres Peña, who have worked with such Flamenco greats as Cristina Hoyos and Eva La Yerbabuena.
