QUEEN OF THE GYPSIES a documentary on the legendary Carmen Amaya.

" A powerful film, a stunning success"
The Boston Globe

"Terrific and politically astute"
The Village Voice

QUEEN OF THE GYPSIES, a Portrait of Carmen Amaya (1913-1963) is a feature length documentary, produced and directed by filmmaker, Jocelyn Ajami. This biography is the first American film portrait of Gypsy dancer, Carmen Amaya, who brought the fury and grit of Flamenco "puro" to the international stage. Born in abject poverty, Carmen Amaya began to dance at the age of four on the streets of her native Barcelona. At the age of twenty three she became a star of Spanish Cinema and shortly thereafter, the darling of Broadway and Hollywood. Nobody before or after has managed to transmit such strong, almost electrical energy, such "duende". She will be forever identified with the passion and fire of Spanish dance. This is the most comprehensive portrait of Carmen Amaya, to date. Interviews with family members, company dancers and scholars add a personal dimension to Amaya’s virtuosity. Archival footage, vintage photographs, music by Sabicas, Carmen Amaya and Domimgo Alvarado. English, Spanish and French with subtitles.
