April 2005 The sound of a guitar played from the soul compels you to listen. - Juan del Gastor Finally we can announce that Juan del Gastor and his wife Luci Rozario will be arriving soon from Sevilla to offer some classes and workshops. This is a rare opportunity indeed since this is his first time ever to come the west coast. Dear friend, beloved teacher, and fiestero inimitable. Many of you already have the pleasure of knowing Juanito & perhaps studying with him in Seville or Morón, but let me offer this as background. Juan Gomez Amaya was born in 1947 in Morón de la Frontera (Sevilla) into one of the most revered dynasties of gypsy flamenco. The dynasty was founded by his uncle the now mythic guitarist Diego del Gastor. His older brother is the renowned guitarist Paco del Gastor. His first cousins include Diegito de Morón and Augustín Ríos (the Bay Areas most authentic gypsy flamenco maestro) both of them superb guitarists in their own right, as well as the dancer / fiestero Andorano, the dancer / maestro Pepe Ríos; his uncle, the beloved cantaor Joselero; and, in the younger generation, the dancers Juana Amaya and Pepe Torres.
For more than 40 years Juan del Gastor has been carrying on the family tradition of performing and teaching. He is highly sought after by the peñas of Andalusia, in the casetas of the Feria de Seville, during the celebration of Rocio, and frequently appears at Sevillas Bienal. He has toured all over Spain and Europe and has appeared in festivals and theatres in the USA, Argentina and Japan.
Juan says of his early years, My first experiences playing the guitar were in fiestas, sitting beside my uncle Diego. He would hand me the guitar and, under his watchful eye, I accompanied such revered singers as Manolito de Maria, Juan Talega, Perrate de Utrera, Anzonini del Puerto, Joselero, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera and Miguel Funi... It was with these singers, gypsies with long distinguished artistic lineages, that I learned the art of accompaniment, and I have a profound affection and respect for them all and for the deep black notes of their song. In addition to these considerable professional accomplishments this man can sing and dance. Anyone who has had the good fortune to be with him in fiesta will never forget it.
It is the aire he brings to everything he does, that has always drawn people to him. This is the flamenco that heats up when done por familia, por fiesta, in the workshops. About Luci - Luci has lived closely within the gypsy culture for more than 20 years. Being married to the guitarist, Juan del Gastor, she was fortunate to be able to hear some of the greatest singers such as Fernanda de Utrera, La Pepa de Utrera, Maria la Burra, and Joselero. She learned her first dance steps in the family weddings and baptisms. Later she learned dance technique with Pepe Rios, Juana Amaya and Angelita Vargas. Luci has danced on stage with Aurora Vargas, Jarrillo and Juan del Gastor. She has worked in the Sevilla Fair, in El Rocio and in many galas. She teaches dance and compás classes in her studio in the center of Seville.
For some time now Juan and his wife, the accomplished Luci Rozario, have been jointly teaching a very effective and well-spoken-of course in Compás y Baile (rhythm and dance) in Seville. It is publicized as an opportunity to learn new steps and dance movements in the Puro (gypsy) style as well as gain an understanding how they fit in with the guitar and cante. Our dance workshop roughly follows this format, but at the intermediate level. It has been suggested that Juan do a workshop for dancers on Fiesta Buleria with cante. This would be for beginning and intermediate students and would demonstrate how the dancer comes in, does her llamada, and goes off - in terms of the cante. Each student would have the opportunity to try out individually her own steps or learn new fiesta steps. Emphasis would be on listening to cante and working a bit with fiesta style. Dance students often ask about this; because there are so few classes with singers they often have little experience with this aspect. This workshop will be in Santa Cruz this trip. It could also take place in the East Bay as a private class or perhaps a few students would like to get together and work in one of the smaller studios... Call to discuss this: (831) 295-7077
