FAREWELL PERFORMANCES!
After a hiatus of close to two years, La Tania returns for a final appearance in the Bay Area before moving back to Spain permanently. Don't miss this rare chance to see this amazing artist.

"La Tania is the genuine article, an artist who combines exceptional physical allure, immense authority and the gift for the spontaneous gesture that distinguishes the finest flamenco specialists." (Allan Ulrich, SF Examiner & Voice of Dance).

La Tania spent her childhood traveling through the flamenco world of Spain; from the caves of Sacramonte, to the gypsy enclave of Morón de la Frontera, and on to Sevilla. She began her professional career at age seventeen becoming a sought-after soloist in the major tablaos of Madrid, such as the prestigious Corral de la Moreria. Shortly thereafter she began touring with some of Spain's most renowned Flamenco companies, including Paco Peña and Mario Maya. She created her own company in Madrid in 1991 and it soon developed into an important conduit for presenting quality flamenco to American audiences from coast to coast. Since that time she has been awarded numerous fellowships for her work as flamenco choreographer, including the James Irvine Fellowship in Dance, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Maintaining close ties and constant collaboration with the most talented and relevant flamenco artists of Spain, La Tania continues to tour and teach workshops internationally.

Jose Valle "Chuscales" is one of today's leading flamenco guitarists. His playing is fearlessly creative while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. Born into a gypsy family in Spain, he grew up performing with his relatives in the legendary caves of Sacromonte. Internationally acclaimed as both soloist and accompanist, Chuscales has worked with some of Spain's most outstanding artists such as la Cingla, Mario Maya, La Chunga, Farruco, La Tati, El Guito, Joaquin Fajardo, La Polaca, Faico and Juan el Lebrijano. He has also served for many years as musical director for Maria Benitez's Teatro Flamenco. In a recent interview, the legendary guitarist Juan Maya Marote recognized Chuscales as one of his most important musical heirs.

The charismatic singer and percussionist, Yiyi Orozco, was raised in a family of professional flamenco artists. A child prodigy, he was already working as a flamenco percussionist by age 12. As a singer, he toured Germany at age 18 with "Flamenco Rubio" and later performed throughout Europe with companies such as Fernando Belmonte's "Ballet Albarizuela" and Flamenco Alahama. In recent years he has accompanied dancers such as Javier Baron, El Toleo, El Pelao, Maria Serrano, La Tania and Antonio Granjeros and has been a featured musician in Maria Benitez's Teatro Flamenco.

Juanaire studied with some of Spain's most sought-after dancers such as Manolete, Ciro, and El Guito. He has performed with the companies of Rafael Cortes, Rebecca Carmona, Ursula Moreno, Antonio Andrade, Fiesta Flamenca and Flamenca Alhama. He was one of the specially selected soloists for the gala for Herzfogin Von Wurttenburg in Germany which was also attended by His Majesty Juan Carlos of Spain.

Carola Zertuche began her dance career at Mexico City's premier Tablao Flamenco "Meson de Triana," as Soloist for Pilar Rioja's company "Reflejo Español" She relocated to the US in 1996 and began performing with some of the country's most important Flamenco companies as guest soloist, including La Tania Flamenco and María Benítez's Teatro Flamenco. Ms. Zertuche was selected twice as soloist for the juried San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. In 2001 her work Co-directing the Zambra Dance Company was praised for its provocative synthesis of Flamenco with traditional Middle-Eastern dance and rhythms. In 2002, she toured United States and Mexico with Sentido Flamenco, staring Alegria Suarez, Juan Antonio Suarez"Cano", Mercedes Amaya and Santiago Aguilar. Her home base is San Francisco and she performs and teaches regularly throughout the Bay Area.

A Benefit for
Phoebe Vernier "La Fibi"

Queridos Amigos,
As you may have heard, this past month, our dear friend and compañera flamenca, Phoebe Vernier, "La Fibi" was hospitalized at Petaluma Valley Hospital for a ruptured appendix.  She is scheduled to be released in a few days and is still recovering.

Phoebe has been a professional dancer in the Bay Area for the past twenty years.  Just the other week, she quit her job at the Sheraton Hotel so that she could realize her dream of teaching and performing flamenco full time.  She had just begun to do what she loves most when this medical emergency took place.    Unfortunately, she does not have any medical insurance and will be responsible for a sizable hospital bill.  Her medical condition has prevented her from working over the past two weeks and she is likely to be out of work for at least two months.

Many of you have already expressed your concern and want to help.  Any financial gifts you can spare at this time are greatly appreciated and will go a long way. Please take the time to show your love and support to a buena compañera flamenca.

Here's how you can give:
Please make checks or money orders payable to "Phoebe Vernier" and send to:
Phoebe Vernier "La Fibi"
208 Hayes Lane
Petaluma, CA 94952
