Interview
with Ricardo Diaz and Jason Engelund:
Jason
Engelund: You've played all over the world with an amazing range
of artists. From Spain, to China, to France and of course SF California,
U.S.A. What are some of favorite memories?
Ricardo
Diaz: Two places that I remember with fond memories are Honolulu,
Hawaii performing with Monique Bermudez and Marseille, France with
Alejandro Grandados. Hawaii was the first time I was playing guitar
in a big show and in a big theatre by myself and Marseille at first
was difficult and intimidating because it was a gypsy crowd. It
was a foreign country and pretty overwhelming, but exciting as well.
JE:
What's the coolest place you've played in? What's the most memorable
time you have performing?
RD:
I have so many great memories in Flamenco to list only a couple,
but Vancouver, Canada, Buenos Aires and France were special places
to perform. The people in Canada and France are very respectful
to musicians. In Europe they look at artists as professionals and
not just entertainers, and they treat you very well.
JE:
What are some of the differences in the flamenco scenes around the
world?
RD:
There is not a lot of difference in the Flamenco scenes around the
world. But there are certainly places like Canada and France for
example that Flamenco is appreciated a lot more. Spain is the top
level in Flamenco also where you find the cradle of Cante,
specialy Andalucia. I like to start right here in the Bay Area with
a lot of talented hard working artists, like "La
Tania" who is inspiration, her Flamenco in the Redwoods open
the doors to many of us, La Monica is very supportive of the
scene and has given me and others lots of opportunities and
without a doubt Ernesto Hernandez who in my eyes is a Flamenco
legend in San Francisco going back 40 years. And in San Jose Eddie at
the Flamenco Society.
JE:
Can you describe for us your personal style of flamenco? Do you
have influences from geographic regions, or influences from other
artists?
RD:
That is a difficult question. I am still searching for my personal
style. I don't think I have found it 100%. I am more influenced
by other artists than geographic regions. I am more affected by
different artists than in the styles of players from one area or
another. My biggest influence is probably "Canito". I
think I have learned the most from him. I also have great respect
for Tomatito and Vicente Amigo. I like their gypsy style and their
musicianship and how they have blossomed into top guitarists. And
Paco De Lucia is the most recognized guitarist. I started to learn
Flamenco after hearing Paco De Lucia.
JE:
Any plans for recording an album?
RD:
At this moment I am interested in becoming a better guitarist and
improving and learning. I want to find new challenges. I think an
album will come, but I don't know how soon.
