FEATURED
ARTIST Koko de la Isla started her formal dance training at the age of ten. She has studied a variety of dance forms including ballet, baroque dance, modern dance, jazz and tap. She received a Bachelor of Art degree in dance and continued on to the graduate study in dance choreography at the University of California, Irvine, where she found Flamenco as her lifework. After she moved to San Francisco Bay Area to focus on Flamenco, she has studied in Spain, USA and Japan with El Junco, Juana Amaya, Eva la Yerbabuena, Belen Maya, El Guito, La Tania, Rosa Montoya, Diana Alejandre and Isa Mura. She has performed throughout San Francisco Bay Area and in Japan as a soloist. From 1995 to 1997, she returned to Japan, "the Flamenco heaven" where Flamenco is most appreciated besides Spain. She studied with El Poka Okazaki and "Angelita Vargas" from Spain and performed with the Flamenqueros as a soloist. In Japan, she performed at tablaos, "El Pancho" in Kobe and "Esperanza" in Tokyo as a guest artist. Back in the Bay Area since 1997 she has regularly performed at local tablaos, taught Flamenco classes to a large number of culturally diverse students, and conducted flamenco performances at colleges and community organizations.
I have often been asked by some audience, "You are not Spanish. How come you are doing Flamenco?" It seems that your culture is so different, almost opposite from Flamenco." I still remember that when I danced in front of a Spanish consulate in San Francisco 10 years ago, one lady commented to the Spanish consulate and his wife, " She is not even an American, but she dances Flamenco so well!" The Spanish consulate responded, "Oh, you don't know that Japanese people LOVE flamenco?! Flamenco is very much appreciated in Japan." Flamenco was, in fact, as popular in Japan 10 years ago as in the Bay Area now.
Recently, Flamenco has become an international dance form just like Ballet and has been danced all over the world. Japan happens to be the country where Flamenco is the most popular, only second to Spain. It is unfortunate that people in North America do not know much about Flamenco. As a matter of fact, most of them do not even know how to pronounce "Flamenco" correctly. As gypsies who created Flamenco originally came from India, there are many elements related to Oriental dances. The more I learn the cultures behind Flamenco, the closer I feel to it and I feel at home. A Japanese Flamenco critic said, "Flamenco may seem like a bottomless well. However, I know there is a familiar face at the bottom." + + + New tablao shows at Cuccini
