FEATURE ARTIST Kerensa De Mars
Kerensa
DeMars was first captivated by the art of Flamenco while earning her Bachelor
of Fine Arts at the San Francisco Art Institute. With a minor in ethnic
dance forms and a continuing passion for anthropological dance studies,
she was soon embedded in the San Francisco Flamenco scene. By 1997, Kerensa
had followed her chosen path to Madrid where she caught the eye of the
renowned world music group RADIO TARIFA and toured with them as a featured
dancer through 2003. In those six years she continued intensive Flamenco
studies with some of Spain’s foremost Flamenco artists. Having recently
returned to San Francisco, Kerensa’s explosive, expressive presence
on stage, a mélange of tradition and Moorish influenced stylings,
will surely mark the continuing evolution of a very passionate and learned
interpreter of the soulful emotions that bring Flamenco to life. |

A former member of the acclaimed Arabic dance troupe FCBD, Kerensa pioneered the group’s signature ‘Tribal style’ in Spain. Her highly stylized use of Flamenco elements within Tribal style Arabic dance has made her a sought after performer, teacher and choreographer. She has been invited to choreograph works for the Madajonda Theater Company of Madrid, the Saada Group, the Iberian Spanish Dancers and as a consultant for the Joaquín Ruíz Flamenco Company. Kerensa regularly conducts workshops both in the US and abroad, including a recent invitation to give a seminar on Tribal style Arabic dance at the Saada Center for Oriental Arts in Madrid. |

Kerensa formed Querencia Productions in 1999, a performance company whose works were recognized for their creative synthesis of Arabic, Flamenco and Mediterranean music and dance. The company was featured at the Teatro Pradillo of Madrid and was often invited as the lead act for Radio Tarifa. Through Querencia Productions, Kerensa also created and presented the acclaimed “Algunas Noches de las Mil” (Some of the 1,001 Nights), a children’s show that played at the Teatro Pradillo for four weeks in 2003. |
