New World Flamenco Festival
FRONTERAS
August 4-13, 2006

Yaelisa, artistic director
Jason McGuire, music director
Douglas C. Rankin, producer
Juan Blanco & Trini Gutiérrez, representatives in Spain

The regions of southern Spain are known, historically, as la frontera – the frontier or border. This year the New World Flamenco Festival features three companies rooted in tradition but who are also adding dazzling new dimensions to the language of flamenco. And, in keeping with the theme, Fronteras, the Festival opens with a special tribute to the artists of Morón de la Frontera.

This year, the Festival will host more than 35 artists from Spain and over 6000 people in attendance from southern California and across the country. It’s a fiesta – and everyone is invited!

+ Aug - Oct
Jason Engelund, el Pintor

Flamenco and Bullfight inspired paintings by Jason Engelund, el Pintor, on display in the ThirstyBear's Flamenco Room.

The paintings on display at the Thirsty Bear's Flamenco Room carry a part of flamenco through painting. The Landscape of the Seguiriyas series is an exploration of the psychological landscape of flamenco’s deep song of lament. The seguiriyas, as Paco Sevilla writes in his book “Queen of the Gypsies”, is flamenco’s most profound song. Flamenco and bullfight cultural icons such as the ghostly bullhorns of the bullfight, or the anvil of the Romani (gypsy) blacksmiths are used in these paintings to visually sing a seguiriyas. The Morao y Oro series looks to a lighter side of flamenco, the dress of a spinning dancer, the flowers of a fiesta, the chairs where your friends and family come and go, to sit and play. See more of the artists' work at jasonengelund.com.

SF Flamenco Back Issues

~ Law of Gravity

I’m going! Thinking of the past
Looking fully at my fear and confronting it / I’m going! Like a weather vane without direction / Taken by whatever shines the brightest and with freedom / I’m going! Without a compass and without a hurry / In my solitude I found myself in multicolor / I’m going! / Without escaping this time
Air for the labyrinths of my heart

“Morón, a tiempo y a compás”
(Morón, a time and a rhythm)
Compañia Juana Amaya
with Juan del Gastor
August 4-6, 2006

Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 6pm

The festival presents a premiere work dedicated to the flamenco of Morón de la Frontera. Morón, a tiempo y a compás is an ode to a singular style of flamenco found in this tiny village. Juana Amaya’s company will include her uncle, the legendary guitarist Juan del Gastor, her daughter Nazaret, and other musicians and dancers from Morón. This marks the first time that Juana will have performed with her uncle, making these performances a tribute as well to the del Gastor legacy that she and her daughter have inherited.

“Sin Fronteras”
(Without Borders)
starring Savion Glover, Yaelisa
& Son de Jerez
August 8-9, 2006

Tue & Wed at 8pm

The celebration of la Frontera continues with Sin Fronteras, an exciting evening of innovation. The evening begins with an ensemble of gypsy stars from Jerez de la Frontera featuring Andrés Peña, baile, Manuel de la Malena and Luis Moneo, cantaores, Domingo Rubichi and Juan Manuel Moneo, guitarra, The second half of the program stretches boundaries by presenting the extraordinary American dancer Savion Glover with Yaelisa in an extended dance duet that also features Jason McGuire ‘El Rubio’ on guitar.

These virtuosos may be from distinctively different backgrounds, but both are recognized for their extraordinary improvisational skills – a talent at the very heart of flamenco dancing. Inspiration sin fronteras.

“Una Mirada al Flamenco”
(A Look at Flamenco)
Compañia Rafaela Carrasco

August 11-13, 2006
Fri & Sat at 8pm; Sun at 6pm

Rafaela Carasco, of Sevilla, is one of the most important flamenco choreographers of the younger generation. She is also a breathtaking dancer. Una Mirada al Flamenco, Rafaela’s latest work fully displays her rare ability to explore new concepts while maintaining the essence and integrity of flamenco. The company includes five male and female dancers and an equal complement of guitarists, singers and other musicians. The 2006 festival is pleased to present Ms. Carrasco at a time when her star is rising.
