The performance ARTE Y PUREZA is a rare look into the purest forms of
flamenco music and dance. MARI PEÑA brings powerfuly emotional gypsy singing from the town of Utrera, the birthplace of legendary cantaora, La Fernanda. LUIS PEÑA & JAVIER HEREDIA, two gypsies from Seville, will share their charismatic art of "baile casero", one of the most spontaneous forms of authentic gypsy flamenco. Expect dazzling footwork and unique style from dancer, LA GALLARDI, described by flamencologist Mario Bois as “truly exceptional and astounding”. Guitarist ANTONIO MOYA --the preferred accompanist for such luminaries of gypsy cante as Pepa de Benito, Ines Bacán and Bernarda de Utrera-- will be joined by his disciple ETHAN MARGOLIS to set the musical background for an unforgettable evening. Arte y Pureza is a display of artistry and personality rarely seen outside private gatherings of flamenco artists and gypsy families in Andalucia. La Nina Productions and The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership invite you to experience these amazing artists first-hand in an intimate setting where every nuance of their performance can be fully appreciated.

Andalucía and the SF Bay Area
An Interview
with Cihtli Ocampo "La Gallardí", Ethan Margolis
& Jason Engelund
We conducted this quick interview just before the busy holiday season and the company's travel. Via email, from different parts of the states and Spain we pieced it together just before the New Year.

Jason:
I saw you two a while back when you were on tour through California and it was a fantastic tablao show. What is special and different about this upcoming tour and how are your performances different from others?

Cihtli:
This tour is different in many ways. The show you saw in San Francisco was an improvised performance with artists we had never worked with before. Those shows are fun to do because you never know what is going to happen, and one learns to thrive off the element of surprise. The “Arte y Pureza” tour is going to be a completely different experience in every aspect. Ethan and I will be working with four of our closest friends and artists who are considered to be at the top of their field. We all know each other very well on and off the stage, and that makes performing together an unusually emotional, and profound experience. The show’s aim is to unite all three elements of flamenco; the dancing, the singing, and the guitar to create an evening where friendships, families, and life experiences are explored, mourned, and celebrated onstage. Ethan and Antonio have been working together over the last few months creating exquisite music for the entire performance. There will be some choreographed sections of the show while the improvisational aspects will be much more exciting than usual since we give each other a strong sense of security while exploring onstage. The dynamic of this company allows us all to take risks and express ourselves to our fullest potential while maintaining the purest essence of gypsy flamenco.

Jason:
Cihtli, tell us about working in Exils. La Carboneria is such a historic place. It’s great to see the scene from there. Tell Paco Lira “Hi” from all in San Francisco. What’s it like to perform for film? Many takes of the same number over and over again? And would you do more film work in the future?

Cihtli:
Yes filming in the Carboneria was very exciting. I had been dancing there for over a year, but when I entered that afternoon, Tony Gatlif had transformed it and created an ambiance that made me feel as if I had stepped into another era. The air was raw and you could feel a heat, or an artistic tension that was very motivating. My scene was filmed in only two takes with no rehearsal. I had been called earlier that morning and been asked to film. I showed up at 5pm with no idea of what they would ask of me. I heard the song a few times while they filmed the musicians and then Tony told me to walk through the crowd and to dance. I was petrified at first because I had never seriously danced “rumba” before. I just tried to have fun and not to worry about the outcome. I enjoyed the process immensely and would do film again if the opportunity came along.

Jason:
Can you each tell us a bit about who you’ve studied with and what you learned? And can you describe your own particular style?
