New
World Flamenco Festival
FRONTERAS
August 4-13, 2006

Yaelisa,
artistic director
Jason McGuire, music director
Douglas C. Rankin, producer
Juan Blanco & Trini Gutiérrez, representatives in Spain
The
regions of southern Spain are known, historically, as la frontera
– the frontier or border. This year the New World Flamenco
Festival features three companies rooted in tradition but who are
also adding dazzling new dimensions to the language of flamenco.
And, in keeping with the theme, Fronteras, the Festival opens with
a special tribute to the artists of Morón de la Frontera.
This
year, the Festival will host more than 35 artists from Spain and
over 6000 people in attendance from southern California and across
the country. It’s a fiesta – and everyone is invited!

Carolina
Lugo's Brisas de Espana Flamenco Dance Company
Brisas
de Espana is recognized as one of the top Flamenco-Spanish Dance Companies
in the US. The uniqueness of Brisas de Espana emanates from the combination
of Flamenco-Spanish dance presented on stage by Artistic Director, Carolina
Lugo. Her artistic vision which brings top international Flamenco artists
from Spain and abroad to grace the stage with her and her company, interweaves
the extraordinary talents of these artists with melodic palates of musical
virtuosity and colorful step design with the clever staging of dancers
and musicians interlacing rhythms with one another to create a colorful
canvas of artists on stage.
Brisas de Espana was founded by award winning Artistic Director-Dancer-Choreographer,
Carolina Lugo. She is widely regarded as one of the most gifted Flamenco-Spanish
dance artists of her generation. Carolina is a master of the castanets
and Spanish dance. Her music video of her castanet interpretation of "Leyenda",
is shown on the nationally broadcast show, Classical Arts Showcase. Carolina
has dedicated herself over the last ten years to preserving the lineage
of artistry of La Argentina, Antonio Triana, Luisa Antonio Triana, Lola
Montes, Merche Esmeralda, Ciro and Azurin, by teaching the art form of
both genres-Flamenco-Spanish dance, to a new generation of artists and
dancers.
The totality of Spanish dance includes Spanish Classical {Escuela Bolera},
Neo-Classical, Regional dances and Flamenco. The art of the castanets
is an integral part of Classical Spanish dance and the castanets are sometimes
used in Flamenco dances such as Sevillanas, Fandangos de Huelva, to name
a few. The importance of Spanish dance and its connection to Flamenco,
is in danger of being lost in the US. Carolina is committed to preserving
this art form by continuing to present important works by leading Spanish
composers of the 20th Century such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados,
Isaac Albeniz and Geronimo Gimenez.
Carolina created a base of operation in the San Francisco Bay Area in
1995, when she founded her Dance Company and School. She has been training
and developing dancers for her company since that time and has guest taught
workshops and master classes throughout the West Coast. She has received
multiple creative works awards for her choreography since 2000. Her work
has been commissioned by numerous conductors of symphonies, philharmonic
orchestras and opera companies.
Carolina teaches year around classes in the East Bay in Oakland, Walnut
Creek-Concord and Pleasant Hill for Children-ages 5-1/2-10, Teens-ages
11-16 and Adults-ages 18-50+. She has a CHILDREN'S TRAINING PROGRAM for
ages 7-12 and an APPRENTICE TRAINING PROGRAM for ages 13-23. Enrollment
is by Audition Only. For more information about her training programs,
