FEATURE ARTIST Carolina
Lugo's Brisas de España “The
flamenco legacy of Lola Montes lives on in the pure dance poetry of Carolina
Lugo’s Brisas de España. The dazzling colors and passionate
energy of this troupe will leave you breathless.” Carolina Lugo's Brisas de España presents the intense energy of Flamenco with its passionate earthy roots and the elegance and grace of classical Spanish dance. Carolina herself was trained in classical Spanish dance which like ballet had its beginning in the European royal courts. The difference from other ballet traditions is the Spanish dancers relationship to the music. The dancer creates their own rhythms to which they move to by playing castanets and syncopated hand clapping. This marriage with the music is accomplished at the same time as they whirl their long dresses and shawls (mantons) while their hearts embrace the audience with the depth and fiery sensuality of dancing.
During the past five years the company has performed it’s home season concerts in the Dean Lesher Theatre in Walnut Creek. The company has averaged more than 30 performance dates a year during this period, performing in concert at La Peña Cultural Center in Oakland, Ashkenaz and Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley, Luther Burbank Center and Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Village Theater in Danville, Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, Fox Theatre in Redwood City, Wente Winery in Livermore and the Varsity Theatre in Davis. The company has performed with the California Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Diablo Symphony and in 2003 will be performing with the Peninsula Symphony. In 1999 Brisas was invited to perform in Tony La Russa’s “Stars To The Rescue” Benefit Concert for The Animal Rescue Foundation {ARF} with the Eagles, Clint Black, and Bruce Hornsby in Walnut Creek and in 2001 with Michael Bolton, the Doobie Brothers, Dennis DeYoung and Richard Marks at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. |

America has a long tradition of Spanish Dance performances with orchestrations. Drawing on Flamenco, Folk, and School dance roots, Neo-classical Spanish dance developed through the genius of the Argentine-born Spanish dancer, La Argentina, who was the first to dance to the music of leading Spanish composers, such as Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla. Antonio Triana was La Argentina's dance partner and collaborator and later mentor and dance partner for Lola Montes who passed on the legacy of these traditions to Carolina Lugo. |
