FEATURE ARTIST

Carolina Lugo's Brisas de España
Flamenco Dance Company

“The flamenco legacy of Lola Montes lives on in the pure dance poetry of Carolina Lugo’s Brisas de España. The dazzling colors and passionate energy of this troupe will leave you breathless.”
- Diablo Magazine

Carolina Lugo's Brisas de España presents the intense energy of Flamenco with its passionate earthy roots and the elegance and grace of classical Spanish dance. Carolina herself was trained in classical Spanish dance which like ballet had its beginning in the European royal courts. The difference from other ballet traditions is the Spanish dancers relationship to the music. The dancer creates their own rhythms to which they move to by playing castanets and syncopated hand clapping. This marriage with the music is accomplished at the same time as they whirl their long dresses and shawls (mantons) while their hearts embrace the audience with the depth and fiery sensuality of dancing.

During the past five years the company has performed it’s home season concerts in the Dean Lesher Theatre in Walnut Creek. The company has averaged more than 30 performance dates a year during this period, performing in concert at La Peña Cultural Center in Oakland, Ashkenaz and Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley, Luther Burbank Center and Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Village Theater in Danville, Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, Fox Theatre in Redwood City, Wente Winery in Livermore and the Varsity Theatre in Davis. The company has performed with the California Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Diablo Symphony and in 2003 will be performing with the Peninsula Symphony. In 1999 Brisas was invited to perform in Tony La Russa’s “Stars To The Rescue” Benefit Concert for The Animal Rescue Foundation {ARF} with the Eagles, Clint Black, and Bruce Hornsby in Walnut Creek and in 2001 with Michael Bolton, the Doobie Brothers, Dennis DeYoung and Richard Marks at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland.

~ Law of Gravity

I’m going! Thinking of the past
Looking fully at my fear and confronting it / I’m going! Like a weather vane without direction / Taken by whatever shines the brightest and with freedom / I’m going! Without a compass and without a hurry / In my solitude I found myself in multicolor / I’m going! / Without escaping this time
Air for the labyrinths of my heart

America has a long tradition of Spanish Dance performances with orchestrations. Drawing on Flamenco, Folk, and School dance roots, Neo-classical Spanish dance developed through the genius of the Argentine-born Spanish dancer, La Argentina, who was the first to dance to the music of leading Spanish composers, such as Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla. Antonio Triana was La Argentina's dance partner and collaborator and later mentor and dance partner for Lola Montes who passed on the legacy of these traditions to Carolina Lugo.

"The dance scene has seen a rebirth of the influence of Spanish dance and Flamenco. The excitement is very present in Brisas de España." Contra Costa Times veteran dance critic, Marilyn Tucker said, "Lugo who earned her Spanish Dance stripes early on with veteran performer Lola Montes, proves herself adapt in choreographing story dances based on the traditions of classical court dances... pure dance poetry."

Caroloina Lugo

Ms. Lugo made her professional debut at the age of 14 with Ms. Lola Montes. She toured extensively for nine years performed in major concert halls in the United States and Internationally as well as with leading symphonies throughout the country. Ms. Lugo has danced as a guest artist with the Los Angles Opera was also a featured dancer with the Los Angeles Symphony and has danced as a featured artist at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. She was a company member of Rosa Montóya Bailes Flamencos for five years.

Ms. Lugo founded Brisas de España in 1995. In 1998 she was commissioned by California Symphony Conductor, Barry Jekowsky tto choreograph and perform excerpts from Bizet's "Carmen." She was again invited to perform at the California Symphony's July 4th Concert at the Concord Pavillion, excerpts from the musical score of "Zoro" before an audience of ten thousand in 1999. Maestro Jekowsky once again commissioned Ms. Lugo to choreograph and dance the Spanish Ballet, the "Three Cornered Hat" by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla in the Fall of 2000. She and her company performed this new work with the Reno Philharmonic in November 2000 to two sold out concerts. Ms. Lugo most recently performed this piece with the Diablo Symphony in February 2002. Ms. Lugo and company have been invited to perform in Tony La Russa's "Stars To The Rescue" Benefit Concerts for the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) in 1999 with Michael Bolton at the Paramount Theater in Oakland. Ms. Lugo has been commissioned by Maestro Mitchell Kline with the Peninsula Symphony to choreograph and dance excerpts from Bizet's "Carmen" and Manuel de Falla's "La Vida Breve" and to present her 2001 choreographic work of Maurice Ravel's "Bolero", in January 2003. She was recently recognized by the California Arts Council for her creative works and was honored with a two year grant in support of her work and organizational expenditures.

Ms. Lugo is a master of the castanets, which is an integral part of Spanish dance. Her music video featuring her playing her castanet interpretation of Leyenda by Isaac Albeniz has aired many times on the nationally syndicated television show Classical Showcase.

Carolina Lugo’s mission is to preserve the full spectrum of Spanish dance traditions that have been performed in America for more than 150 years. Ms. Lugo is looking forward to sharing her passion and love of Spanish dance and music with you in the coming years.
