Jason Engelund, el Pintor

Flamenco and Bullfight inspired paintings by Jason Engelund, el Pintor, on display in the ThirstyBear's Flamenco Room. Prints and originals for sale. Contact jengelund@yahoo.com

The paintings on display at the Thirsty Bear's Flamenco Room carry a part of flamenco through painting. The Landscape of the Seguiriyas series is an exploration of the psychological landscape of flamenco’s deep song of lament. The seguiriyas, as Paco Sevilla writes in his book “Queen of the Gypsies”, is flamenco’s most profound song. Flamenco and bullfight cultural icons such as the ghostly bullhorns of the bullfight, or the anvil of the Romani (gypsy) blacksmiths are used in these paintings to visually sing a seguiriyas. The Morao y Oro series looks to a lighter side of flamenco, the dress of a spinning dancer, the flowers of a fiesta, the chairs where your friends and family come and go, to sit and play. See more of the artists' work at jasonengelund.com.

Theatre Flamenco is celebrating its 40th Anniversary with an outstanding production that covers the history of the Company and the breadth of its repertoire. The first half of the program will showcase the Company’s signature works and the second half will present both new works and performances by guest artists from Spain. Theatre Flamenco alumni will be performing with current members in this celebration of the Company’s 40 years in the Bay Area.

Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco was founded in 1966 to fill what was then a dearth of Spanish dance arts in the Bay Area. Over the years, the company has served as a beacon of cultural pride, a reservoir for the diverse traditions of Spanish culture, and a vital source for artistic collaboration. Theatre Flamenco was the first American dance company to stage full productions of Spanish dance in the U.S., and is one of the oldest dance companies in California.

"Aniversario" is both a celebration of the Company's first 40 years, as well as a tribute to Miguel Santos, the Company's venerable 81-year old leader, whose unwavering commitment and passion for the work has sustained the Company to date. Mr. Santos has been with Theatre Flamenco since 1968, serving as principal dancer, choreographer, and since 1987, as Artistic Director. He performed with Teatro La Zarzuela of Madrid and both Jose Greco’s and Lola Montes’ companies, and to this day continues to refine his flamenco skills by attending the Festival de Jerez in Sevilla, Spain. A three-time NEA choreography fellowship recipient, Mr. Santos’ major works for Theatre Flamenco include Misa Flamenca, Concierto No. 2, Regionalismos, Fusion, and Ritmo; he has also choreographed Mexican and other Latin American pieces for the Company.

In tribute to Mr. Santos' legacy, the centerpiece of the "Aniversario" will be a revival of Misa Flamenca, choreographed by Miguel Santos in 1975 with support from an NEA Choreographer’s Fellowship. Misa Flamenca is choreographed to the music of a contemporary Spanish Roman Catholic Mass, in which the recorded choral sections, flamenco song, guitar, and percussion instruments in traditional music (arranged by R Fernandez de Laterre). Misa Flamenca is one of Mr. Santos’ seminal works, and exemplifies the intensity of his choreography and the theatricality and style of the Company.

Recognizing that flamenco is a vital living tradition, the second half of the evening-length program will feature new works by Theatre Flamenco’s Assistant Director Carola Zertuche and work by Ricardo Lopez, a featured guest artist from Spain.

Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco was founded in 1966 by Adela Clara to fill what was then a dearth of Spanish dance arts in the Bay Area.
