Flamenco Dance with Andres Marín
Three-Day Workshop (yes, really!)
October 19, 21 and 23, 2005
Studio Danza 3691 Mission Street (At Highland)

Critically acclaimed for his performances at the Bienal del Arte Flamenco de Sevilla in both 2002 and 2004, Andrés Marín is considered a major force for the future of Flamenco dance. His unique perspective is inspired by a deep understanding of Flamenco song and fueled by a fearless impulse to stretch the boundaries of Flamenco dance. His innovations on traditional structures, rhythms and upper-body style coupled with his strength, intensity and passion have distinguished him as one of the most important Flamenco performers on the international scene today.

Born in Seville in 1969, son of flamenco dancer Andrés Marín and singer Isabel Vargas, he has traveled all over the world as guest artist and choreographer, performing in theaters such as Space Zero in Tokyo, the Komische Opera in Berlin, and the Maestranza Theater in Seville. His most notable performances include his appearances as guest artist with Manuela Carrasco in her show “La Raíz del Grito,” and his collaboration with Hindu tablao player Zakir Hussain in the show “Masters of Percussion” as part of Amsterdam’s Het Slagwerk Percussion Festival. He also participated with the Vredenburg Utrecht Metropole Orkest in a project fusing flamenco, jazz and the poetry of Federico García Lorca. He has toured extensively in the United States including appearances at the Joyce Theater in New York City, the Dance Umbrella Festival in Boston and the Bay Area Dance Series in San Francisco. A recent undertaking was the highly acclaimed “Trilogía: Pasado, Presente & Futuro” performed in partnership with dancers Rafael Campallo and Alejandro Granados, with presentations in the XV International Festival Madrid en Danza, the XI Bienal de Arte Flamenco in Seville, and the Mons de Marsan Festival in France. In 2002 Andres formed his own company which debuted with his original choreography, “Más Allá del Tiempo” at Las Maison de la Dance in Lyon, France, and later toured Holland and the United States and was presented at the Festival de Jerez and the Bienal de Sevilla. In 2003 Andres presented his second work “Asimetrías” in the Bienal de Sevilla and then took it to France, the United States and Mexico. Andres Marin teaches master classes in Berlin, Tokyo, Holland, the United States and at the Centro Andaluz de la Danza in Sevilla.

He started singing flamenco when he was 12 in his home town of Jerez de la Frontera and was soon discovered by the guitarist Gerardo Núñez who brought him to sing in Carmen Cortés’ “Amor Brujo” at the 1994 Bienal de Sevilla.
