These workshops are based on the classes that Juan and Luci offer year-round
in Sevilla.
BAILE WORKSHOP – Bulerias Por Fiesta
This workshop is designed to heighten the dancers’ awareness of
the dance in relation to the cante and the compas. Listening to the music,
how and when to enter ,the nature of the llamada, how and when to exit,
“aire,” & palmas will all be addressed.
The
emphasis is on the spontaneous nature of bulerias and the tools one needs
to improvise within traditional structures.
CANTE WORKSHOP – Bulerías por Fiesta
This class will also be useful for dancers who wish to have a greater
understanding of the cante.
A
quote from Juan, “To sing in compás and with feeling is more
important than having a powerful voice. In this workshop I will teach
the entrances and endings of the songs and the tones as well as the breathing
technique used in order to sing the verse in compás, always accompanied
by my guitar.”
Although
originally conceived of as a complement to the baile workshop, other palos

JUAN DEL GASTOR is one of the great interpreters of Gypsy flamenco guitar
alive today. Born in Moron de la Frontera, he is a nephew of the legendary
guitarist Diego del Gastor. For more than 40 years Juan has been carrying
on the family tradition of performing and teaching. He is highly sought
after by the peñas of Andalusia, in the casetas of the Feria de
Seville, during the celebration of Rocio, and frequently appears at Sevilla's
Bienal. He has toured all over Spain and Europe and has appeared in festivals
and theatres in the USA, Argentina and Japan. Besides his phenomenal guitar
playing, Juan is a highly charismatic singer and dancer with an open heart
who transmits a contagious sense of flamenco joy wherever he goes, inspiring
all with his pure Gypsy flamenco!
LUCI
ROZARIO has lived closely within Spanish Gypsy culture for more than 20
years. Being married to the guitarist, Juan del Gastor, she was fortunate
to be able to hear some of the greatest singers such as Fernanda de Utrera,
La Pepa de Utrera, Maria la Burra, and Joselero. She learned her first
dance steps in the family weddings and baptisms. Later she learned dance
technique with Pepe Rios, Juana Amaya and Angelita Vargas. Luci has danced
on stage with Aurora Vargas, Jarrillo and Juan del Gastor. She has worked
in the Sevilla Fair, in El Rocio and in many galas. She teaches dance
and compás classes in her studio in the center of Seville.

Flamenco Technique & Choreography with Lakshmi
Lakshmi will teach an intensive workout focused on strengthening
the student's technical foundation. Various palos will be used- Soleá,
Alegrias, Bulerias, Tangos, etc. Class will begin with a series of footwork
exercises, followed by marking exercises and to finish warm-up, and turns.
The second half of class will be dedicated to the choreography (Guajira
with a fan). This part of class will be accompanied with Cante.
Lakshmi will be selling accessories and fans from Spain!
Baile por Bulerias with Luis Peña
Luis Peña will teach an authentic gypsy style Buleria choreography.
He will sing various styles of Bulerias to teach how the dance works with
the song. This way the dancer will also build confidence dancing to the
singing. Palmas variations will also be given. The last 10 min. of class
Luis will share his personal flamenco videos. He will introduce different
artists and explain what they do best. This class is appropriate for singers,
dancers, and guitarists alike because the style is por fiesta and anyone
can get up and dance in a fiesta!
Cante class with Luis Peña
Luis will teach Cante por Bulerias, Tangos de Triana and Soleá
por Bulerias. Students will be given copies of all the letras that will

For example: recognizing changes in the cante, clarifying the appropriate
keys (tonos) and understanding the significance of a song. The last 10
